Winner Katie goes green with the Bulls!

Hereford United players are visiting ASDA Hereford at 14:00pm on Friday to meet the champion of the SCRIB and ASDA, ‘Yes You Can’ recycling challenge.

Katie Boulton, aged 9, designed a poster which will now be used by SCRIB, the Steel Can Recycling Information Bureau, to help teach children all around Britain how to keep green.

June Thurston, events coordinator at ASDA Hereford, will be on hand to meet Katie and SCRIB, after ASDA backed the campaign to help encourage shoppers to use recyclable ‘bags for life’.

Hereford United players will also be attending to meet Katie, as the Bulls are keen supporters of local green issues.

Yes You Can was a recycling challenge organised by SCRIB, the steel can recycling information bureau, an education initiative which promotes sustainability in schools.

Endorsed by the Hereford United team, Yes You Can is now offering Katie’s class an exciting SCRIB sustainability workshop to teach them all about recycling and how steel is recycled.

Katie’s winning design was chosen by Hereford United, SCRIB and ASDA for its originality, use of colour and message: “please reduce, reuse, RECYCLE!”

SCRIB’s Nicola Bennett commented: “Katie’s design not only shows her creativity but it is eye catching and is something other pupils will respond to. Not only will it be appearing on the SCRIB website but we will be using it in school visits throughout the UK to help promote steel can and other material recycling. I want to thank Katie and all the other pupils who entered, as the standard of entries was very high indeed. I am now looking forward to visiting Katie’s class to teach the pupils even more about recycling.”

ASDA’s June Thurston said: “ASDA was thrilled with the response from local pupils, which is great news for us as it means our customers’ families will be environmentally aware and will help increase recycling in Hereford.”

ASDA Hereford already supports recycling by offering plastic bag recycling and encouraging families to use their ‘bag for Life’ instead of plastic bags.

A staggering 11 billion plastic bags are used in the UK every week and each one can take hundreds of years to rot away in a landfill site. ASDA Hereford wants to make sure it’s customers aren’t adding to the problem and that’s why it’s teaming up with SCRIB.

ASDA want to do more by making it easier for their customers to reduce their carrier bag usage (which is currently 2.2 billion each year) and has committed to The Courtauld Commitment,* which aims to reduce environmental impact of carrier bag usage by 25%.
